Except moral issues and being a responsible borrower how does keeping underwater mortgages benefit anyone? People who are keeping underwater mortgages are who the country desires for consumer spending. They have favorable earnings to keep up with the underwater mortgage at higher than current rate. Nevertheless they will not have any more cash for spending for themselves or their house anymore. They will not be in a good state of mind to spend money either.

They could not absolutely think of costly vacations, dinners or spending sprees when they owe twice more than what is their home value. At the end of the day would they be better off than they are now? Most likely most of such people were hoping for a rapid comeback for a while now. But the economy obviously is in life support and requires the second quantitative easing. Doubtful it can free anyone from their difficulties at the moment.

According to reports people in strategic default welcome the relief and will go out and entertain themselves in the shops and dining halls when the ones that keep paying the home mortgage loan have to keep up with payments each month. How far could this go until those people get the picture that their works for being good borrowers will not bear fruit for number of years in to future and their current home loan lender will not appreciate it in any way or shape?


Say it is about being a responsible citizen, how draining money on painfully underwater home assist anyone? Possibly taking their losses early will benefit everybody including the consumer spending. It could be time to get a fresh beginning. It looks like that rents have gone down noticeably as well. They would be a lot better off every month if they were to finish keeping up with their mortgage loans. It would be a meaningful loss for mortgage industry, but with a credibility they have currently not many homeowners will be sorry for them.
